Communicating Climate Change: working with arts and culture

This event is being run by Creative Carbon Scotland for the Scottish Communities Climate Action Network (SCCAN). Visit their Eventbrite page to sign-up.

Arts and culture have an important role to play in engaging people meaningfully with climate change. Creatives find new ways of visualising and framing issues, cultural organisations offer access to audiences and provide space to bring people together, activists use artistic tools to get attention and provoke responses. For people working on climate change, adopting cultural methods and working directly with the arts and culture sector offer powerful tools when looking to communicate climate change effectively.

This session is run by Creative Carbon Scotland, a charity working on the roles of arts and culture in addressing climate change since 2011. It will provide a comprehensive introduction to this area followed by workshop time to help you develop your own ideas.

The event will start with a screening of the short film ‘Climate Action Needs Culture’. This will be followed by talks from Lewis Coenen-Rowe of Creative Carbon Scotland and environmental artist Hannah Imlach with time for questions and discussion. The second half of the event will consist of activities discussing examples of artistic and cultural approaches to communicating about climate change and workshopping how you could apply these approaches to your own work. We’ll conclude with time to share your thoughts and will offer practical advice on the next steps to take.

SCCAN and Creative Carbon Scotland work hard to ensure that our events are safe and inclusive spaces. For accessibility requests and other enquiries please drop us a message at events@scottishcommunitiescan.org.uk.
