‘Pennies From Heaven?’

‘Pennies From Heaven?’

An exhibition of work created through Upland’s Energise residency project by Ted Leeming, Morag Paterson & Jason Nelson

11th May – 29th June 2019
Gracefield Arts Centre, Dumfries

Join us for the opening on Saturday 11th May, 2-4pm.

Pennies From Heaven? is an exhibition of work created as a result of Upland’s Energise project – a residency programme exploring the history and legacy of the Galloway hydro-electric power scheme (a series of dams and power stations built in the 1930’s).

The Energise project ran from October 2018 – April 2019 with the aim of giving artists the opportunity to research and creatively explore the subject of climate change in relation to the unique landscape of Dumfries & Galloway, focusing on a specific area known as the Galloway Glens.

Two overlapping artist residencies generated exploratory and meaningful work in response to energy generation. Focussing on ‘past’, ‘present’ and ‘future’ the artists explored present day attitudes to energy with the surrounding communities, including young people and schools, mapping the scheme’s impact to the present day through both people and place. The exhibition title refers to a quote taken from an interview published at the time the dams were built. Posed as a question it seeks to prompt dialogue and address attitudes to consumerism and climate change.

The residencies were undertaken by photographers Ted Leeming & Morag Paterson and visual artist Jason Nelson, who was assisted by associate artist Catherine Major.

The work exhibited at Gracefield Arts Centre is a culmination of the residencies, presenting new art work that reflects the research and engagement undertaken.

The project is supported by Creative Scotland and the Galloway Glens Landscape Partnership.
