Air, rock and sea; space, time, change and hope: exploring the political and environmental elements of our nation and world with fiddler Aidan O’Rourke, pianist Kit Downes, and guest director Simon Blendis. Elemental is a performance centred around a new piece for harmonium, piano, fiddle and string orchestra by Aidan O’Rourke and Kit Downes – two musicians with an embarrassment of accolades, and a taste for musical pioneering.
Their new commission, There is no beginning, fuses the visceral energy and haunting beauty of Aidan’s traditional Celtic roots with wisps of jazz, folk, ambient and classical.
It’s also inspired by a poem, Edwin Morgan‘s Slate: a love poem to a politically-and-environmentally battered Scotland. Surrounding their tender reframing of the poem’s messages will come a clutch of contemporary works that similarly speak to us of all things elemental – space and silence, sea and air – intertwined with melodies echoing an ancient Scotland.
Performances at other venues on 10th, 12th and 13th November.
Elemental is supported by The PRS Foundation’s Open Fund for Organisations.
