Hard Truths: An Exhibition of Prize-Winning Photography from The New York Times opens at Green Arts Initiative member The Assembly Rooms on Friday, August 3 in conjunction with events at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, Beyond Borders International Festival and Summerhall.

World’s leading photojournalists

An arresting exhibition of news photography from the world’s leading photojournalists opens in Scotland this month, as part of an extended exhibition and event series hosted by The New York Times and Beyond Borders. Hard Truths: An Exhibition of Prize-Winning Photography from The New York Times will be on public display from Friday, August 3, in conjunction with a series of discussions curated by Beyond Borders at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Edinburgh International Book Festival and Beyond Borders International Festival.

The collection is the first of its kind from The New York Times, curating a series of groundbreaking stories into a timeless exhibit exploring conflict, humanitarian crises, societal change and individual identity in the 21st century.

The collection brings together 60 deeply revealing images that capture the immediacy of social and political upheaval taking place in the world today, including a portrait of corruption in Venezuela, the hope and stress faced by Iranians in Tehran, the aftermath of ISIS in Iraq and Syria, President Rodrigo Duterte’s deadline anti-drug war in the Philippines, and the era of change in Cuba.

Bearing witness

Integral to the photography exhibition will be a series of events as part of a wider conversation about the importance of deeply-reported journalism and the role of photographer to bear witness to global economic and political change.

Top New York Times journalists will be speaking about the work at events, including Associate Managing Editor for Audience Jodi Rudoren, Europe Editor Jim Yardley and photojournalist Ivor Prickett – who, earlier this year, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his heartbreaking images of ISIS survivors in Mosul and Raqqa.

“Photographers arrive in forlorn corners of the world as strangers, but bring an honest commitment to share their subject’s story, to show the world as he or she lives it,” writes Ms. Rudoren, in an introductory essay written to accompany the exhibition. “They withstand hurricanes or sniper fire; they wade in polluted water, sleep in crowded boxcars or endure tear gas alongside the protagonists. They do these things because they cannot recreate the situation later. They must be there.”

Founder of Beyond Borders Scotland Mark Muller said Hard Truths would provide a platform to further the global conversation about geopolitical issues, conflict, and the important role of journalism to bring these issues to the fore.

“Photojournalism is a powerful, universal medium which aids our understanding of the human condition and complex world events. It prompts a visceral reaction and makes important issues hard to ignore. The Hard Truths exhibition and discussion series furthers the intellectual discourse and debate around these issues to promote greater understanding between different nations and cultures around the world.”
