Creative Carbon Scotland (CCS) believes in the power of the arts and culture to help achieve sustainability in Scotland and the world.The arts inspire, illuminate, communicate, educate, entertain and encourage new ways of thinking and shared experience – all attributes needed to tackle climate change. We are a nimble, positive, influential and growing charity in a dynamic field. We are experiencing great demand and enthusiasm for our work in carbon emissions reduction and climate change adaptation from both the cultural and the climate change sectors. Our founding partners are the Edinburgh Festivals, the Federation of Scottish Theatre and the Scottish Contemporary Art Network. We receive significant long-term funding from Creative Scotland, the public body that supports the arts, screen and creative industries in Scotland.

We recently worked with Creative Scotland to help it write its bold and ambitious Climate Emergency and Sustainability Plan, which places the creative and cultural sector as key agents of change in the transformation to a sustainable Scotland. It will shape Creative Scotland’s funding, policy and work until 2045, and ours as well.

The Green Arts team

The Green Arts team within Creative Carbon Scotland works with cultural organisations to support them in addressing the climate emergency through practical action on emissions reduction, adapting to climate impacts, and working with their wider influence among artists and audiences. Main programme strands are:

  • Green Arts: Providing tools, resources and training that equip and enable cultural organisations to reduce emissions and adapt to climate impacts in the context of a just transition to a lower carbon future. The main vehicle for this is our flagship 350-member community of practice and knowledge-sharing network the Green Arts Initiative.
  • Carbon Management for Culture: Providing best practice guidance, tools and resources for cultural organisations to understand and manage their greenhouse gas emissions as well as direct support and co-ordination of environmental reporting for some groups of organisations with reporting requirements
  • Beyond Scotland: Sharing our knowledge and experience and learning from others within the UK and internationally about how culture can practically address the climate emergency.

In 2022 we’re relaunching the Green Arts Initiative, holding a Green Arts Conference to bring the sustainable arts community together, developing digital tools and resources and supporting organisations with environmental reporting.

Employment details

Job title: Green Arts development officer

Salary: £31,013 + 3% of salary in pension contributions

Reports to: Caro Overy, Green Arts Manager

Responsible for: N/A

Hours: Full time. This means a 35-hour week with a degree of flexibility on both sides, as some evening and weekend work may be required and busy periods may call for extra hours, with time taken off in lieu during quieter periods.

Flexible working and job sharing: Creative Carbon Scotland welcomes proposals for flexible working or job share, subject to the needs of the role being satisfactorily fulfilled.

Holidays: 20 days plus 10 public holidays to be taken at times agreed with the line manager.

Place of work: CCS is based at City Chambers, High Street, Edinburgh, but remote and hybrid working is the norm at present. Travel throughout Scotland may be required if government guidelines and personal health concerns permit.

Contract and notice period: This is a permanent contract dependent on continued funding. A probationary period of three months will apply, following successful completion of which the full contract will be confirmed. The notice period is two months for both employer and employee.

Secondments: Creative Carbon Scotland is very willing to consider a secondment for this role where this will embed climate change knowledge and work within the cultural sector

Equipment: CCS is a BYOD (bring your own device) organisation. A laptop and mobile phone can be provided if required. Additional equipment will be provided in line with CCS policies if needed to support a healthy working from home workstation.

The role

Main purpose of job:

  • Leading the development and delivery of tools and resources in the Green Arts unit, in particular developing support for cultural organisations required to report their environmental impacts and actions, members of our flagship Green Arts Initiative, and contributing to the wider Green Arts programme


  • Leading and developing the Carbon Management for Culture aspects of Creative Carbon Scotland’s Green Arts work (35%) through:
    • Designing data collection, management, analysis and feedback processes for organisations committed to environmental reporting
    • Developing advice and guidance resources and communications for reporting organisations
    • Providing advice and support to reporting organisations
    • Designing and implementing tracking systems for reporting organisations
    • Leading development and implementation of the Green Arts Framework to support reporting organisations
    • Liaising with the Green Arts and Edinburgh Festivals officer to support festivals’ environmental reporting methods
  • Co-ordinating design, delivery and evaluation of tools and resources for cultural organisations addressing the climate emergency (35%). Tools and resources are required for areas that include the following:
    • Greenhouse gas emissions calculation and reporting
    • Understanding organisational environmental impacts
    • Adapting to climate impacts through cultural work
    • Working with cultural influence among artists and audiences to achieve environmentally positive outcomes
  • Working with Green Arts colleagues to provide support for cultural organisations with required environmental reporting, including one to one meetings and workshops (20%)
  • Contributing to the wider Green Arts programme including our Green Arts Initiative and Beyond Scotland work strands through giving talks and presentations where required and bringing together relevant research and knowledge, and contributing to the Green Arts Conference (5%)
  • Contributing to the wider Creative Carbon Scotland team in response to the organisation’s strategic and administrative needs and its work on equalities, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and its relation to climate justice (5%)

Person specification

Essential criteria

  1. Excellent data management and analysis skills with a sound working knowledge of quantitative and qualitative methods
  2. Experience or relevant degree-level training in providing carbon management and environmental sustainability support and advice to a range of audiences
  3. Skills and experience in the development, production and dissemination of digital tools and resources
  4. Excellent written and oral communications skills, including the ability to deliver presentations to a wide range of audiences, and the ability to explain technical information to non-technical audiences
  5. The ability to form strong relationships and partnerships with colleagues and external individuals and organisations
  6. A commitment to EDI and its intersection with climate change
  7. Flair and imagination

Desirable criteria

  1. The ability to align our work with the current Scottish/UK climate change policy and approaches
  2. Awareness and understanding of the Scottish cultural sector
  3. Understanding and knowledge of culture’s environmental impact
