Opportunity: Open Call for Extinction Rebellion Summerhall Exhibition and Events Programme

7th June 2019

Looking for radical, experimental and poetic proposals for the month of August.

XR Edinburgh have been invited to curate a programme at Summerhall to highlight XR’s three demands.

  1. Tell the truth about the climate and ecological emergency
  2. Act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025
  3. Create a Citizens’ Assembly to oversee the process

During the festival, Summerhall offers a programme of live music, performance and visual arts. XR Edinburgh’s contribution seeks to respond to the most pressing issue we face today.

This is an opportunity to co-create a lively space for rethinking and reimagining our relationship with all living creatures and the Earth. We encourage experimental, radical and poetic proposals in any medium – including artefacts from XR actions – that generate a response to the climate and ecological emergency.

The exhibition and events programme asks:

  • How can art challenge society’s culture of denial?
  • What role should art play in the Extinction Rebellion movement?
  • How can art envision and enact a response to the climate and ecological emergency?
  • How can art engage people on a visceral level and create a collective sense of solidarity?

The spaces

Lower Galleries 1, 8.3 x 4.5m

Lower Galleries 2, 8.2 x 2.6m

A connecting corridor and staircase

These spaces have limited natural light and are located in Summerhall’s basement. They will be open 7 days per week between 11am-5pm and 7-11pm from 28th July to 31st August.

Gallery 1 will be programmed as an exhibition space with Gallery 2 doubling as a space for screenings and live work e.g. performances, workshops, talks, and interventions, etc. We also encourage the use of these spaces as a starting point for workshops that leave the building and engage with the city.

In the rebellious spirit of XR we invite responses that challenge this call-out and offer a different vision.
